The history of Manitoba Harvest Hemp Foods & Oils is more than a story about a local, organically grown product; it is story of firsts and innovation.
Founded in 1998, Manitoba Harvest has become the largest farmer-owned vertically integrated hemp food company in the world.
“We were one of the driving forces to legalize hemp in Canada in 1998 and we were the first company to bring Canadian-grown hemp foods to market,” says Mike Fata, the Co-founder and CEO of Manitoba Harvest.
For Fata, the call to champion the legalization of hemp wasn’t just a business venture; it was also a personal mission. He struggled with obesity as a teenager and eventually resorted to excessive exercise and extreme dieting.
But after he discovered the “superfood” properties of hemp, he had no problem maintaining a healthy weight. Hemp is described as superfood because of its many nutritional benefits.
Manitoba Harvest’s foods contain all 10 Essential Amino Acids and a balanced ratio of the Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs), Omega-3 and Omega-6. EFAs help to lower cholesterol and blood pressure, ameliorate certain types of cardiovascular disease and reduce blood clotting.
Hemp is also a good source of Gamma-Linolenic Acid (GLA). Research indicates that GLA helps alleviate symptoms associated with premenstrual syndrome, menopause, allergies and eczema.
From Hemp Oil to shelled hemp seed, Manitoba Harvest offers a wide array of foods that appeal to young and old. “Since we started out more than a decade ago, we have been able to maintain the leader position by growing our product offerings, distribution and customer base,” explains Fata.
As with previous products, the latest-- Hemp Bliss and Hemp Pro 70 are innovative, “world” firsts.
“We’ve received nothing but great feedback since we launched in April,” says Fata. “Winning the Manitoba Food Processors Association Best New Product 2010 for Hemp Pro 70 and the Company of the Year award are honorable accolades that prove that we are on the right path.”
